In football circles, the name Cristiano Ronaldo dominates the minds of football fanatics and most of them find pleasure in spending the whole 90 minutes watching an individual rather than the team.Such is the case with Douglas Choto, who has become a household name in schools volleyball .

Having been nurtured by his coach, Stanslous Muguto, at Mazowe Boys High, the young man worked quietly towards achieving his goal of becoming a volleyball star.

In an interview with Cool Sport, Douglas Choto said all credit goes to Muguto
“I give all the praise to my former coach Mr Muguto who gave me the platform to showcase my talent. I can say I am a star because of him. I never knew that I was good at volleyball,” said the tall teenager.

Through hard work the boy has been given the nod to lead the prestigious and invincible Cornway Under-20 volleyball team since last year.
In July this year, he went to Malawi for the sub-zonal volleyball competitions with the senior national team and they came second, winning the silver medal.

The sky is the limit for him as he continues to not only fly his school’s flag but country as well. He said at tender age he began to play for national team.

“I was selected in the Under-17 national team for the Cosasa Games in Windhoek, Namibia, where we came first and I was the captain,” he said
Douglas went to Portugal in late July where he represented the nation.

“We went to Portugal and I think we lost because of lack of exposure. The Portuguese displayed professional stunts that left us in awe when they controlled the ball,” he said.

Douglas likes to listen to sungura maestro Alick Macheso during his spare time. According to his volleyball coach, Chekuda Makuyana, Douglas is destined for success.

“The boy is exceptional and I have worked with him for a long time, actually he is a natural leader.
“He motivates the team whenever we are down and does not tolerate defeats. He has been the driving force behind the team’s success,” the coach confidently said.

Two weeks ago, during NASH Under-20 volleyball tournament, Douglas was voted as the best setter of the tournament while his school scooped the grand prize of a trophy and training kits.
