ALEC MUDIMU is one of the more interesting players of the Welsh Premier League.
The 23-year-old has managed to gain appearances for his native Zimbabwe while applying trade with local club Cefn Druids after much success with the Druids.
Mudimu has found himself linked with a move back to England with Football League clubs looking for his signature.
He moved from Harare to Hertfordshire in England at a young age and started his career through the Sheffield Wednesday youth team.
After four years at Stalybridge Celtic, Stockport Town and Nortwich Victoria, Mudimu made a bold switch from below the sixth tier of England straight up to the first tier of Wales, the Welsh Premier League.
“There are a number of things that brought me to the Welsh Premier League. With Cefn Druids being the oldest club it’s been a real honour to support and help the club to new heights like last season obviously going to Europe and finishing where we did, the wide range of exposure is fantastic for any player playing at this level in this league really,” said Mudimu.
He had an incredible unexpected season with Cefn Druids, securing a place in the 2018-19 Europa League as well as his first ever call-up for his native Zimbabwe.
Cefn made a sensational second ever European appearance in over 146 years with Mudimu being a key part of the squad.
The Druids fought hard against a hard preliminary round draw against experienced side FK Trakai from Lithuania with a 1-1 draw at home and 1-0 loss in Lithuania.
The achievement, however, remains the qualifying for such a prestigious European competition, something Mudimu found sensational.
“To appear in Europa with Cefn Druids was amazing; wasn’t the best performance or result out there, but we dug real deep and we’re unfortunate not to get the result we needed/wanted. But all in all was a real honour and amazing feeling to be a part of.”
Mudimu found himself from the seventh tier of England to playing alongside the likes of Costa Nhamoinesu from Sparta Prague and Marvelous Nakamba from Club Brugge, who are currently competing in the Uefa Champions League group stages, in just under a season.
“It’s hard to put into emotions how it felt to gain the first call up. It’s surreal to this day and can’t believe it’s still happening. I’m amazed by it all it’s amazing,” he said.
Now with professional clubs from England knocking on the door and several international appearances under the belt, the future for Mudimu looks bright as he continues with his interesting football career as he made the bold move to swap England for Wales. — Touchline Football
