NEW United States Ambassador to Zimbabwe, Ms Pamela Tremont presented her credentials to President Mnangagwa this Wednesday, thereby taking her official ambassadorial position in the country after her initial nomination by President Joe Biden two years ago.
Mr Biden re-nominated her on 3 January 2023. Hearings were held in May 2023 when she was viewed favourably.
Ms Tremont then took her oath on 10 June 2024.

She will become the first substantive US Ambassador to replace Mr Brian Andrew Nichols whose tenure expired three years ago before US President Mr Biden named him Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs.
Administering the oath of allegiance to Ambassador Tremont last month, the Deputy Secretary for State Management and Resources Mr Richard Verma said she will serve the US Embassy in Zimbabwe with honour and distinction.
“We are dispatching one of our best to Zimbabwe and I look forward to Ambassador Tremont’s leadership in advancing the relationship,” Mr Verma said.
But who is Ambassador Tremont?
According to the United States Department of State, Ms Pamela Tremont is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, class of Minister-Counselor.

Her most recent position was as the Deputy Chief of Mission of the US Embassy in Stockholm, Sweden, where she had the additional responsibility of serving as Chargé d’Affaires for 18 months.
Previously, Ms. Tremont was assigned first as Assistance Coordinator, and then as Deputy Chief of Mission of the US Embassy in Kyiv, Ukraine.
Prior to that, she served as Deputy Chief of Mission of the US Embassy in Nicosia, Cyprus.
She has also held positions as Deputy Director for NATO Policy, Bureau of European and Eurasian Affairs, in the State Department, Political/Economic Counselor of the U.S. Embassy Lusaka, Zambia, and as Political Military Officer in the US Embassy in London, United Kingdom.
Ms Tremont’s three decades as a career diplomat, her demonstrated success as a leader, and her wide-ranging experience across multiple regions and substantive areas make her a well-qualified candidate to serve as US Ambassador to the Republic of Zimbabwe.

Among her other assignments, Ms Tremont has represented the State Department as a student at the National Defense University, served as Political Military Officer at the U.S. Embassy Ankara, Turkey, as a Desk Officer for South Africa in the Bureau of African Affairs, and as a Watch Officer in the State Department’s Operations Centre.
She also was posted to assignments in Port Louis, Mauritius and Calgary, Canada.
Ms Tremont earned her B.A and M.A degrees from Baylor University and is the recipient of multiple State Department performance awards.
She also received the U.S. Army Commander’s Award for Civilian Service.
Ms Tremont can speak French and Turkish.
