UDCORP to construct high-rise flats in Matabeleland region

The Urban Development Corporation (UDCORP) plans to construct high-rise flats in the border town of Plumtree in Matabeleland South province as part of moves to ease accommodation woes in the region.

UDCORP chief executive officer Joey Shumbamhini said this during a stakeholder’s engagement meeting held in the country’s second largest city.

A state-owned enterprise under the Ministry of Local Government, Public Works and National Housing, UDCORP was primarily set up to encourage and assist local authorities to plan and coordinate urban growth and development.

It was also established to improve the living standards of the general populace through developing proper housing and related infrastructure.

Shumbamhini added that in line with the government thrust of devolution, UDCORP has been involved in projects in the region to ensure development is spread across the country`s 10 provinces.

“In the near future, we are going to be involved in infrastructure development in Plumtree where we are targeting to build three high-rise blocks of flats to reduce accommodation woes.

“So far we have done two master plans. We have successfully done master plans for Khusile and Umguza local authorities,” he said. Shumbamhini said UDCORP has land in Hwange and Kwekwe where it also intends to develop high-rise flats.

“We also have land in Hwange and Kwekwe where we are earmarking to develop high rise flats in support of government thrust for devolution and also easing accommodation challenges,” Shumbamhini said.
