SOUTH Africa-based cyclist Meli Ndlovu is set to take part in the Road Racing National Championship set for this coming weekend along the 1km peg Shamva Road just outside Harare.
Classes to take part both male and female are Elite, Under-23, Under-19, Under-17, Under-15, Under-13, Open 20-30, masters, veterans and super veterans.
All elites and Under-23 participants are to hold a Cycling Zimbabwe licence either local or international.
All other classes will be allowed to purchase a weekend licence if not already a holder. Zimbabwe Triathlon members require a weekend licence to race.
The competition will get underway with a time trial on Friday, the road race will be on the next day and the crit race on Sunday.
“I am promising a top three finish. If not I thinkI will be comfortable with finishing inside the top 10,” said Ndlovu.
Ndlovu, a 41-year-old father of two once cycled from South Africa to Zimbabwe to raise awareness on Covid-19 and rose to fame with that feat.
He left Midrand in South Africa on a Saturday at around 3am and reached Bulawayo on Monday at around 1pm.
The feat became a subject of debate on social media platforms, with some disputing Ndlovu’s claim that he left Midrand on Saturday at around 3am and reached Bulawayo on Monday at around 1pm.
Ndlovu, at that time told Chronicle Sport that he was cycling at an average speed of 40km to 45km per hour on the South African side and 21km to 25km/hour on the Zimbabwe side because of the state of roads which meant he had to constantly give way to trucks. — @innocentskizoe
