TWO Bulawayo men have appeared in court for allegedly breaking into a house and stealing R2 000. Freedom Phiri (29) of Nkulumane 12 and Dignity Moses Dube (29) of Nkulumane 11 appeared before Western Commonage regional magistrate Mr Pasipanodya Maturure facing robbery charges.
They were remanded out of custody to 5 December for continuation of trial.
Prosecutor Ms Christina Manyika told the court that on 19 October, the two accused persons allegedly went to Thembelani Sibanda’s (44) residence in Nkulumane 10. Upon arrival, the accused persons approached the kitchen door, which they broke using an unknown object, and managed to enter the house.
The court heard that while inside, the two proceeded to Sibanda’s bedroom and demanded that she open the door or they would break it down. The complainant did not respond to the threats, and the accused persons broke down the door and entered her bedroom.
While inside, Phiri, who was holding an axe, allegedly threatened to assault the complainant while demanding cash and other valuables from her, said Ms Manyika.
Sibanda, fearing for her life, handed over her purse, which contained R2 000. However, this did not satisfy the two, who continued demanding more money. The complainant led them to another room and, in the process, managed to escape and sought refuge at a neighbouring house, said Ms Manyika.
