The story of the priest’s son, who sold his lover’s car to raise money to pay lobola for his other girlfriend, has been the talk of town in Harare this week.
Blessing Manyange was given a car by his girlfriend, Charity Madare, to help him in his hustle but he ended up selling it and used the money to marry his other girlfriend, who is now his wife.
Blessing’s father, who is a priest in Harare, realised that what his son had done was wrong and intervened with a commitment to pay back the money which is equivalent to the value of the car.
Charity said he paid in the initial stages but the priest has not been paying of late because he claims that he is having some financial difficulties.
Well, at least, he made a commitment and he knows that he needs to pay back the amount in full.
He also knows that the conduct of his son is unacceptable and has the potential to damage his family’s reputation.
There is no question that Blessing, because he is the son of the local priest, carries a higher expectation when it comes to morality.
He is supposed to behave in a way which gives the church the impression that he was raised in a good way by his father, who is their priest.
Imagine a priest’s son being known for violence and abusing drugs and being an alcoholic, it doesn’t send the right signal among the community.
This is the same community which expects its priest to provide leadership, not only to his immediate family, but also to the entire congregation.
If he cannot do it within his family, what is the expectation then that he can do it within the wider congregation?
Therefore, we agree with the priest’s decision to intervene and try and find an amicable solution to this circus, which was caused by his son.
What we didn’t expect was the massive support, which Blessing is surprisingly getting, mainly from men on social media, who have been said they are in full support of what he did.
One respondent even said Blessing should be the guest of honour at the international men’s conference.
Some women rightly felt offended and also hit back and threw their support behind Charity who told us that she was even dragged to a self-styled prophet by Blessing, who wanted to lure her into signing an agreement suggesting she had sold him the Honda Fit.
She said she also confronted Petronella, who is now Blessing’s wife, over her car and she responded by posting some photographs of Blessing with her on social media.
We don’t think this is a case which should split men and women and we can’t understand why some men are supporting Blessing.
What he did was wrong and he should apologise to Charity and ensure that she gets a full refund for her car.
We can’t have men abusing women in this age and era and this is a classic form of abuse.
