A 21-YEAR-OLD man from Jotsholo, a suspected mental patient, has committed suicide.

Nkosikhona Nyoni of Dandanda Village under Chief Menyezwa was found hanging from a tree on Monday morning.

His grandfather, Edward Nyoni said Nkosikhona cried for a long period a day before he took his own life, but did not state what was troubling him.

He said his grandson sometimes behaved in a strange way and some people suspected that he had a mental illness, but they never sought medical attention.

“He looked disturbed on that day and later that evening he left the house, running like he had seen something. Because of my age and the fact that it was dark I couldn’t see where he went. I notified villagers in the morning and we all embarked on a search, and found him hanging from a tree,” he said.

A neighbour who preferred anonymity said it was not surprising that Nkosikhona committed suicide.

“He seemed to have problems and I’m not surprised that he has opted to take his life in such a manner. He always looked confused, worried, puzzled and so sometimes he would act like he was seeing things that no one else saw. It’s like he was seeing ghosts,” he said.

Officer commanding police in Lupane District, Chief Superintendent Johannes Govo, urged people to seek help when confronted by challenges, and never to resort to suicide.

“We also advise people to take those suspected of mental illness to health institutions. We’ve heard of cases where some murder, rape, and burn down homes and do all sorts of dangerous things,” he said.
