Merry Christmas Bulawayo

Nkululeko Nkala

PLEASE do not adjust your calendars, it’s not Christmas yet. I still wish all of you a merry one but when the time comes. I know for the arts sector it’s that period where some of us actually cash in on the festive period events, weddings and end of year Christmas parties. I also know this could be a lot better if the powers that be, actually invested in our crafts.

Many a times, we have said we can contribute significantly to the Country’s GDP, just like South Africans, Nigerians and Americans but alas to deaf ears.

As I write this I have with me the City of Bulawayo’s Budget review in preparation for the 2019 Budget document. I have to say it’s really sad when it comes to arts and at this rate our future is bleak. By the way the document has one of the coolest tag lines. It says Bulawayo, City of Kings, Leader in Local Governance excellence with a vibrant economy by 2024. It sounds too nice but it should be all encompassing. I as a creative should see myself part of that vibrant economy. It’s not just about service delivery but investing in all facets and ideas that can take our city forward.

The closest to any mention that our arts could claim to be part of is under social services, and even then its target is merely registering more youth into Youth Centres. What about subsidising halls so more art works can be showcased? What about venues? What about funding the arts as a city? What about studios? What about land?

Bluntly put, what about our own Hollywood? I think it’s high time the city leads the country in showing them art is not just entertainment, but it’s a business.

Speaking of entertainment and our city fathers, let me take this opportunity to appreciate their consistency in running the Christmas Festivities at Nketa Park in Mpopoma. From when we were kids we used to go there to watch, later entertain and watch many budding artistes also get their opportunities. Today marks day one of the 2018 festivities with Switching on of the lights and a Fireworks display which will be sandwiched by performances from Mzoe 7, Msiz Kay, Cool Crooners, Ezimnyama, Thandanani and Iyasa.

Saturday will see Victory Siyanqoba , Umkhathi Theatre, Sungura Masters, Slow Poison and Kaisa among others take turns to illuminate Nketa Park. On Sunday to shut down the festivities will be Bambelela Arts Ensemble, Harsh Touch, Indosakusa, Stiffla, Collen, Gugu and sensational vocalist Ramsey K. Its Christmas period, please drive safely on our roads and stay alive. Until next week, be safe . . .
