The country is expected to receive heavy rains exceeding 50 mm and associated with strong winds, thunder and lightning starting tomorrow, according to the Meteorological Services Department (MSD).
The rains are expected to last until Saturday.
In an advisory, the MSD said warm moist air driven by a system of low pressures to the north and south of the country is expected to generate widespread thunderstorms, strong winds and frequent lightning across Zimbabwe from Tuesday 20 to Saturday 24 January 2026, with some areas likely to receive in excess of 50 mm of rainfall within 24 hours.
“This significantly elevates the risk of flash floods, hazardous road conditions with reduced visibility, landslides and rockfalls, particularly in areas already saturated by ongoing rains,” reads the advisory.
The public should watch out for flash flooding in flood-prone areas, river basons and wetlands. Watch out for strong winds, fallen trees, blown off rooftops and lightning.
“When lightning flashes go inside a house or building, do not stand under a tree or next to all pole or object. During a storm, avoid the use of machinery, open vehicles like tractors. Avoid open areas, using taps or showers and do not go into flooded areas,” the MSD warned.
The public has been advised to follow regular updates from the MSD and Department of Civil Protection.
