Responding to questions, Meteorological Services Department duty forecaster, Ms Linia Mashawi said from Wednesday next week, Matabeleland North, northern parts of Midlands, Mashonaland provinces, Harare and northern Manicaland would be experiencing scattered afternoon and evening thundershowers.
“These evening thundershowers will be characterised by light falls in most areas,” said Ms Mashawi.
She said moderate falls were anticipated in these areas as well.
“As we move into the weekend light rainfall activity should be confined over the extreme northern parts of the country,” said Ms Mashawi.
“Rainfall activity should increase slightly on Wednesday 26 December, and again this will be characterised by afternoon and evening thunderstorms,” said Ms Mashawi.
She said it would be generally warm or hot during the day becoming cool overnight.
“Matabeleland South, south of the Midlands, south of Manicaland and Masvingo from today up to Christmas Day, dry conditions should persist over the southern parts of the country. Freshening of winds should start on Christmas in the evening and from 26 to 28 of December it will be windy nat times, cloudy and cool during the day with patchy drizzle in places in the morning,” said Ms Mashawi
She said they did not anticipate heavy rains over the Christmas holidays, while the southern parts of the country should experience rather a chilly holiday with very light drizzle.
“The northern provinces should have moderate rains,” said Ms Mashawi.
She said the Met Department is advising all drivers to drive cautiously in the rain, as visibility would be poor in such conditions.
Ms Mashawi also urged members of the public not to take shelter under trees during a thunderstorm to avoid being electrocuted.
“People should not attempt to cross streams or rivers which are flooded and farmers should take advantage of weeding their crops if it is not raining,” warned Ms Mashawi.
