THE Meteorological Services Department has warned that violent thunderstorms that may be accompanied by lightning are likely to hit the southern parts of the country.

The department’s senior meteorological officer, Jonathan Chifuna urged people to be cautious in case of heavy storms.

“As temperatures are now becoming hot especially to the south of the country, the probability of violent thunderstorms becomes very high. The violence is in terms of high winds, lightning and a chance of damaging hail,” said Chifuna.

“The public is therefore urged to avoid open spaces in case of thunderstorm, not to cross flooded rivers or streams in the case of heavy storms; take shelter when you experience strong winds; if unsure please contact the nearest Disaster Management Authority.”

The Meteorological Services Department also predicted low rainfall in the country’s southern region for the next week starting from tomorrow.

Chifuna said the possibility of isolated heavy storms could not be ruled out. “Cloudiness and rainfall activity is expected to start reducing from the southern provinces by Sunday 8th February 8th into the February 14th. Please this does not rule out the outbreak of isolated heavy storms,” said Chifuna.

“Currently the entire sub region is under the influence of a series of low pressure systems. These low pressures systems are expected to remain anchored over much of Southern Africa including Zimbabwe until today (Saturday).”

According to the Red Cross, as of January 5, 11 people had died and 800 families affected by flash floods throughout the country since the onset of the rainy season. In the Midlands, 19 houses allegedly collapsed with many more in danger.

In Bikita seven people died on Monday afternoon after their huts were struck by lightning while this week a Bulawayo Grade 6 pupil and Ntabazinduna Grade 7 pupil died when they were also hit by lightning.
