Mexico officials exhume 28 bodies from mass grave

MEXICO CITY. — Mexican authorities have exhumed 28 bodies discovered in a clandestine grave in the Gulf Coast state of Veracruz, a local prosecutor said Wednesday.
In a statement, assistant prosecutor for Veracruz state Arturo Herrera Cantillo said the mass grave was found at a ranch known as El Diamante, on the border between the towns of Tres Valles and Cosamaolapan, in the basin region of the Papaloapan River.
Officials said they believed the dead had been executed as part of a settling of accounts between rival organised crime groups operating in the region.

At least 28 bodies had been exhumed between Monday and Tuesday, said Herrera, suggesting the grave could contain more cadavers.
“Up to yesterday evening, there were 28 cadavers,” he said, adding some of them had “been buried for more than a month.”

Members of the Mexican Navy were stationed around the site as the investigation continues, Herrera said.— Xinhua.
