VERSATILE athlete Godwin Simba Mhaka will take part in this weekend’s Musabvunda Half Marathon and says he will use the event to celebrate his birthday.

Mhaka is fresh from winning several international accolades in powerlifting.

He scooped four gold and two bronze medals at the 2025 edition of the Global Powerlifting and Bodybuilding International contest at the Pak Auditorium in the United Arab Emirates two weeks ago.

The half marathon, set for Sunday, will feature both competitive and recreational runners vying for medals, hampers and cash prizes.

The bodybuilder is now taking aim at taming the Musabvunda 21km half marathon which gets underway at Blakiston Primary School in Milton Park.

“I am going to take part in the Musabvunda half marathon although I am not yet sure in which category, maybe the 5, 10 or 21km race.

“Musabvunda has been my sponsor for years and it will be time to support him.

“I am happy that the race coincides with my birthday and I will celebrate it while taking part in the race.”

Prominent local musicians, including Silent Killer, Freeman and Madzibaba Nicholas Zakaria, are set to provide entertainment after the race.

Event founder and organiser, Kudzai Pasipanodya, expressed his optimism that they will achieve their targets.

Last year’s successful event drew over 2 500 individuals.

This year’s edition aims to double that number with at least 5 000 people expected to take part.

“The preparations are going very well and we are expecting a huge turnout of at least 5 000 participants because the event is a combination of the marathon and a family fun day,” he said.

“We will be having a lot of activities after the marathon.”
