VETERAN body-builder and fitness trainer Godwin Simba Mhaka has intensified his preparations ahead of Universe Powerlifting Championship in Bangkok, Thailand, early next month.
The contest is set from September 12 to 14 and Mhaka has been in the gym for the past four months.
The former body-builder will be taking part in his second international powerlifting event after his debut in Dubai back in April this year.
“I am happy with the way I am preparing for the tournament. I have managed to recover from an injury I had last month and everything is taking shape. I have been working hard for the past four months and I am having my final touches,” he said.
“There is a lot of competition and this is an elite event which needs focus and determination. By next month September, I’ll be ready to smash my personal best,” said Mhaka.
The elite event will feature over 200 athletes from 50 nations but Mhaka, fresh off past victories, is determined to dominate.
“Judging from my past experience I think I will bring home more gold medals this time around.
“I have learned from my past mistakes and levelled up.
Yet, the road to glory is not without hurdles. Mhaka has issued a rallying cry for sponsors, citing the financial strain of elite competition.
“Sponsorship remains a major challenge,” he said.
“I am grateful to Musabvunda Apparel and Total Fitness Zimbabwe for their support, but I need more partners to fuel this mission and lift Zimbabwe’s flag higher.”
Mhaka has seen it in body-building and fitness as his trophy cabinet boasts of titles like Mr Ironman Zimbabwe, Mr Zimbabwe, Mr Ironman Botswana and the 2017 Mr Pretoria Classics.
He also seized gold in the World Fitness Federation’s Mr Universe Bermuda Beach Model category in Las Vegas, US.
