ZIMBABWEAN powerhouse Godwin Simba Mhaka made a stunning debut on the international weightlifting scene, clinching gold at the Global Power-lifting and Body-building International contest held at the Pak Auditorium in the United Arab Emirates on Sunday.
Mhaka, competing against over 100 athletes in the power-lifting and strength contests, walked away with two trophies and five medals in a memorable first outing.
The hulking athlete, fresh from winning the Musabvunda Strength and Wars contest at Blakiston Primary School a fortnight ago, was gunning for glory in his first-ever international power-lifting competition, and he did not disappoint. Lifting an impressive 280kg, Mhaka dominated the amateur category, showcasing raw strength and unwavering determination.
A former body-builder now focusing more on fitness modelling, Mhaka continues to blaze a trail in power-lifting. Having already claimed the Mr Universe Senior Men Bermuda and Warrior Fitness titles last year in the United States, the Total Fitness Gym-based athlete is fast establishing himself in the global arena.
Buoyed by his success at the event, dubbed “The Big Battle of the Warrior,” Mhaka is now eyeing even bigger international assignments.
“I am happy with the way I performed in my first international power-lifting and strength competition, which produced positive results,” said Mhaka.
“I’ve had a passion for body-building and power-lifting from a tender age, and fulfilling my dream on the global stage means a lot to me.
“There was a large pool of high-profile athletes, but I managed to do well, winning two trophies and several medals. It really motivates me to keep pushing forward.”
Mhaka, who trains at Long Chen’s Total Fitness Gym, is already planning for two more major events before the year ends.
“I am looking forward to competing in two more international contests before year-end. I have set my sights on defending my Mr Universe title in Malaysia on October 6 and then competing at the Mr Universe Power-lifting Championships in Bangkok, Thailand, on September 13.
“I believe I have done enough groundwork, and now I’m appealing to the corporate world to help me prepare for the big one, Mr Universe Power-lifting in Bangkok, where I am confident I can bring home another accolade,” added Mhaka.
