FORMER Northern Region Division One Soccer League Soccer Star of the Year award winner Zivanai Mhanda is not getting carried away with his side Black Mambas’ form as they enjoy the mid-season break on top of the table.
Mhanda, who won the coveted award as Mushowani Stars captain in 2014, is one of the experienced players at the Police outfit who are yet to lose a match after the 17 opening games of the season.
“Warumwa Warumwa” have managed 10 wins and seven draws and conceded three goals in the process.
Mhanda however, feels the need to stay focused as the league still has a long way to go.
“I am happy with where we are standing at the moment and it is every player and team’s hope to be on top of the league.
“We have worked hard to be where we are and I am hopeful that we will continue with our fine run. We have played as a unit and credit should go to everyone, especially the defence which has stood so resolute.
“The games are tough as there is no easy team in the region. After the mid-season break, I think we will continue with the fine form. There are still many games to go, so we have to remain focused,” said Mhanda.
The attacking midfielder, who also once turned out for Premiership sides Dynamos and Ngezi Platinum Stars, remains humble and gives all credit to hard work and commitment.
The star midfielder made history by becoming the first ZIFA Northern Region Division One player to win the Soccer star of The year accolade during his Mushowani Stars tenure which he later helped to gain promotion to the Premier League before the team folded.
Mhanda, who in 2014 walked away with a Toyota Sprinter for his efforts, had an opportunity to try his luck with Japanese side Vissel Kobe in the J-League.
When he won the accolade Flame Lily’s influential captain Gift Phiri, who guided his team to the Premier League, was the first runner-up while Gunners’ McDonald Motsi was voted the third best player in the league.
Meanwhile, in the Eastern Region Division One Soccer League, log leaders FC Wangu Mazodze will face Masvingo United in the country’s old town derby at Mucheke.
FC Wangu Mazodze are enjoying a good spell and will be put to test by Una-Una who are sitting mid-table on position 11.
