ARENEL FC team manager Kudzayi Mhandire has quit the club with the major reason for throwing in the towel suspected to be the general unrest in the topflight league’s newsboys’ camp.
The players at Arenel have refused to train ahead of their game against Simba Bhora at Wadzanai Stadium on Saturday.
The players are demanding that they be paid their owed salaries and winning bonuses.
Mhandire was in charge of the side when they won promotion but changed roles to become team manager as he did not have the required papers to sit on the bench as head coach of the club.
In the resignation letter gleaned by Zimpapers Sports Hub, Mhandire did not go into detail as to the reasons behind his resignation.
“This letter serves to notify you that I am resigning from Arenel Movers Football Club with immediate effect. Thank you very much for the good and bad times we shared and I hope the team progresses well. Painful as it is, I had to make this difficult decision,” said Mhandire. The coach is already linked with a move back to Division One.
A player who spoke on condition of anonymity said Mhandire’s departure is a disaster for the club.
“It’s sad. He is one guy who was motivating the boys when things were tough. Life goes on but it appears tough times lie ahead,” said the player.
Efforts to get in touch with club administrator Juma Phiri were fruitless with indications he is out of the country.
Despite the club leadership previously and still insisting the situation at the club is stable, the opposite appears to be true.Last month, in his post-match interview after losing 2-0 to Yadah, Arenel coach Farai Tawachera hinted that there are problems at the club.
Tawachera revealed that they did not go for camp before the match, as it was called off on Friday evening, on the eve of the game that was played on a Saturday. This was not the first time the team failed to camp as the same happened when they hosted FC Platinum.Last year, when the club was playing in the Zifa Southern Region Division One, they defied all odds despite facing financial challenges that saw their players go for months without getting their salaries.
The players were constantly receiving winning bonuses. – @innocentskizoe.
