Mhangura school seeks assistance to build infrastructure

Sunday Mail Correspondent

VARIOUS stakeholders are making efforts to improve the infrastructure and quality of education at Gravellote Primary School in Doma district, Mhangura, Mashonaland West province.

Established in 2016 as a satellite school, Gravellote caters for 398 learners under the tutelage of nine teachers.

However, the institution’s infrastructure still needs to be improved, as lessons are being conducted in makeshift structures.

School authorities are presently working hand in glove with Mhangura Member of Parliament Dr Douglas Mombeshora and the local community to improve the state of infrastructure at the institution.

Gravellote Primary School headmaster Mr Chrispen Ngawu says they have initiated  learner-driven projects to generate funds for construction of more durable structures.

“We have taken some initiatives internally, such as raising chickens and starting a garden to contribute to the construction fund. However, our efforts have been hindered by setbacks such as damage caused by community livestock to the garden and equipment failure, like the collapsed borehole, which is rusting and making the water unfit to drink,” he said.

In addition, teachers and parents are moulding bricks for construction of new classroom blocks and staff accommodation. Modern and decent housing will enable the school to attract and retain qualified teachers.

Besides the lack of resources, another major challenge is the lack of electricity, which hinders the provision of digital-based education.

Mr Ngawu also indicated that sporting infrastructure would help learners in football, handball, netball and volleyball, among other sports.

Overall, the school is seeking partners to help construct two school blocks to accommodate four classes, as well as staff housing, a borehole to supply clean water and classroom furniture.
