FORMER Hillcrest College head of sports Crispen Mhike has hailed Makanakaishe Charamba for making it to the final of the 200m at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games on Thursday.
Charamba together with Tapiwanashe Makarawu made history by becoming the first Zimbabwean pair to reach the final despite not making it to the podium.
Makarawu finished sixth and Charamba finished eighth in the final.
Mhike, who worked with Charamba at Hillcrest before he left for the United States, said he was happy for the young athlete, who has always shown potential.
The versatile sports administrator Mhike, who is a former Craven Week team manager, was impressed by the progress which Charamba has made over the years.
Mhike is now head teacher at Heritage College and believes Charamba is a good athlete who is also academically gifted.
“I was so delighted for both Charamba and Makarawu for their progress and also as someone, who worked with Charamba before.
I knew about his potential well before he made it all the way.
“The duo left a lasting impression at the 2024 Paris Olympics Games by making it all the way to the finals. There is a lot of talent and I hope we will, as a country, continue to encourage young athletes to take sports seriously.”
