THE Mashonaland West Handball Association moved a gear up in their endeavour to promote the sport in their province when they recently held a Level Two coaching course at Chinhoyi High School.
Thirty participants, who were all former Level One coaching certificate holders, took part in this course under the tutelage of experienced national instructor Farai Gwisai.
They (the participants) were drawn from districts in the province. Alfos Mhondiwa, the vice-chairperson of the Mashonaland West Handball Association said: “We are happy that we have managed to hold this course and applaud our partners and stakeholders, Nash, the provincial education directorate and NAPH who assisted in making this course a reality.
“We aim to develop the lovely sport of handball to an elite level throughout the province,” Mhondiwa said. Mhondiwa, who is also the province’s technical chairperson, also said that he has drawn a programme where all coaches will be upgraded to a position “where we can compete for honours at all levels as a province”.
“Mashonaland West came late on the handball scene but we come with force. We are in a drive to introduce handball to all corners of Mash West and the first port of call is coaches and referees’ training. We have lined up Level One courses throughout the province in May so that all districts can play handball from grassroots level, which is primary school level.
“Meanwhile, we have engaged the NAPH leadership in the province to introduce handball at provincial competitions during the second term and we are appealing to provincial leadership, sponsors and donors to promote our young athletes who are the bedrock of success in the future.
