MICE boost for Manicaland businesses

WITH Manicaland set to host a MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) conference during the Sanganai/Hlanganani/Kumbanai World Travel Expo in September, local businesses are geared for a new era of economic growth.

MICE tourism, long recognised as a key driver of local economies worldwide, is expected to revolutionise business opportunities in Manicaland.

The influx of business tourists, corporates, industry leaders, and international visitors, will present a myriad of economic benefits across sectors, from hospitality and transport to local small businesses and professional services.

MICE tourists usually spend more than leisure tourists and often demand high-quality services, infrastructure, and amenities.

Players in the business sector, macro, small and medium enterprises and tourism industry in Manicaland, said the inaugural MICE conference is the beginning of a new chapter in Manicaland’s economic development.

As businesses across sectors begin to tap into the potential of MICE tourism, the province stands to gain, not only economically, but also in terms of global visibility.

Zimbabwe National Chamber of Commerce Manicaland vice-president, Mr Tendai Chitowa said: “Manicaland is ready for business, and the coming of MICE tourism helps put us on the map in a whole new way. This is not just tourism, it is investment attraction, skills development, and regional empowerment, all rolled into one. Even after the event, businesses in Manicaland will grow, people will visit the Eastern Highlands more than ever. We are honoured that as Manicaland we are having such a platform. It is not a secret that we are a tourism giant, and this opportunity is a great opportunity for us to shine.”

Mr Adonis Mutigwe, Elephant Lodges general manager said: “The arrival of MICE events in Manicaland is a major opportunity for our hotels and lodges. Conference delegates stay longer, spend more, and demand quality. This pushes us to raise our standards while also boosting our revenue. It is a win-win for the entire hospitality chain.”

Mr Willard Madhombiro, a tourism and business development consultant said: “The tourism industry will be the primary beneficiary of MICE events, with the accommodation sector seeing a direct boost as room nights are converted into revenue. The food and beverage sector will also thrive, turning increased customer numbers into sales across restaurants, bars, pubs, and nightclubs — many of which are obtaining licenses to cater to the influx of visitors. Local suppliers, including abattoirs, butcheries, wholesalers, and supermarkets, will see a surge in demand for their products during this period. Additionally, the MICE events will provide part-time employment opportunities for youths and women, especially for vendors selling refreshments like water and ice cream.

‘‘The construction industry, too, stands to benefit, with refurbishments already underway to ensure that hotels and lodges meet the expectations of international tourists.

‘‘Companies should stay alert for tenders; as numerous opportunities will arise in the lead-up to the event.”

Mr Baldwin Chidzikwe, who is a MSME player owning catering and event services business said: “When major expos and conferences come to our province, small businesses like ours get a seat at the table. From supplying décor to catering lunches, MICE events give local entrepreneurs real chances to grow and be seen. We are already preparing for such a platform, and it is critical for players like me and other businesses to maximise on such a platform.”

Tourism and Hospitality Industry Minister, Honourable Barbra Rwodzi, addressing delegates drawn from across the globe during the MICE conference in Bulawayo last year, said MICE creates significant business opportunities for the nation, while fostering collaboration and innovation across various sectors.

She said Government is committed to positioning Zimbabwe as one of the leading destinations for global events and conferences.

“Overall, Zimbabwe has a great potential for MICE tourism, with its unique attractions and growing infrastructure. Addressing the challenges and leveraging on opportunities thereof, can help the country become a competitive destination in the regional MICE market. As such, this conference serves as a crucial platform for networking, enabling delegates to connect, share ideas, and forge lasting relationships.

‘‘These interactions can lead to fruitful collaborations, paving the way for future investments and initiatives that will enhance our hospitality sector.

‘‘Thus together, we can harness the full potential of MICE tourism, creating a ripple effect that benefits, not only our cities, but also our local communities,” said Minister Rwodzi.
