Organised by Lamsuka Foundation, this year’s pageant was different from the previous ones as it involved external models and audience.
In an interview, founder and director of Lamsuka Foundation, who is also the man behind the modelling pageant, Lameck Lamsuka Kasuka said this year’s event was unique as it catered for a bigger crowd in the form of models, sponsors and the audience.
“This year’s Miss Lamsuka has proved to be different from the first two pageants that have been held so far because it involved quite a number of exceptions in comparison with the first two pageants held ever since the Foundation was launched.
“This made the event a unique one because it was big and better than the others,” he said.
Patience Besethi was chosen the first princess while Grace Chirigwa walked away with second princess tag.
The pageant is an annual event and the inaugural event was held in February 2010 when Lamsuka Foundation was launched. Kasuka said over the past years the pageant mainly focused on student nurses and doctors from UBH.
Kasuka, however, said in future the pageant would be extended to other institutions such as Mpilo Central Hospital and Ingutsheni.
“The first two pageants that were held in the last couple of years, only involved people from UBH.
“But judging from the impressive turn up witnessed this year, plans to extend the pageants to other institutions are under way especially considering that funds raised from such events would be directed towards charity,” he said.
Kasuka also said some of the funds were given to orphanages and Eaton Ward, a ward for infants at UBH, the school of nursing and Bulawayo Terminally ill Committee.
Kasuka gave special thanks to all the sponsors who took part in this year’s Miss Lamsuka.
“The first two pageants were marred by a lot of hiccups as we had to cover so much ground in trying to make ends meet.
“I am very grateful for each and every sponsor who took part in this year’s pageant,” he said.
Kasuka said apart from organising events to raise funds for charity, the Foundation, had been involved in sponsoring sports tournaments particularly rugby.
He said this year the foundation planned to embark on a health outreach programme billed to offer free medical treatment to the elderly and the young.
“The Foundation will this year focus on a health outreach programme and the programme is set to commence this coming Sunday,” said Kasuka.
Kasuka is a former rugby player, whose career came to an abrupt end after sustaining a major injury to his spinal cord in the early 90’s. His genuine sportsmanship resulted in the setting up of Lamsuka Foundation that has been commended for its unwavering support in sports over the past years.
