Midlands Province’s preparations for the country’s 35th Independence Day celebrations are at an advanced stage. Indications are that more than half of the $20,000 targeted money for the historic event has been raised.
Minister of State for Provincial Affairs, Cde Jason Machaya, said the fact that the country was now 35 years old made the celebrations more exciting and extra special.
He said Zimbabweans should always cherish their independence which came as a result of a protracted armed struggle.
Cde Machaya said the province was expecting thousands of people to attend the main celebrations to be held at the usual venue, Mkoba Stadium, on April 18.
“I can confirm that planning for the celebrations is now at an advanced stage. We are happy as a province with the response from the corporate sector and individuals. Our target is to raise $20,000 and more than half the amount has been collected. We want to have a memorable event,” he said.
Cde Machaya said if the province manages to raise the target money, they would forgo the annual Governors Ball.
He said a number of beasts had been donated for the celebrations.
Cde Machaya said there would also be game meat, drinks and lots of entertainment on the day.
“We’re expecting thousands of people to throng various centres in the province but the main celebrations will be at Mkoba Stadium.. People will be celebrating at district and ward level in our eight districts. I know that these celebrations will be better than last year’s,” said Cde Machaya.
President Mugabe is expected to deliver his independence message at the National Sports Stadium to millions of Zimbabweans.
Ministers of state for provincial affairs will read President Mugabe’s speech in their respective provinces.
