CHEZIYA Gokwe High will host the inaugural FIDE-rated Midlands Junior Chess tournament this weekend.

The tournament, which is eligible for players under the age of 20, will see players competing in the open section as a way of improving the competition. Blessing Jemani, the tournament organiser, said they are looking forward to having more than 40 athletes from the Midlands Province, and the registration closed on November 21. “We are going to host the inaugural Midlands junior chess tournament at Cheziya Gokwe High. The tournament is unique in that it is the first-ever fide-rated tournament for juniors in the province.

“The impetus behind this initiative is to create a rating pool of fide players so that when players go outside the country, they get fair pairings. “It also develops our chess to have the best 40 players drawn from schools such as Cheziya, Maryward, Mbizo, Fletcher, Mkoba 3 High, Nkululeko, Midlands State University, and Midlands-based colleges.

“We will have an age limit of under-20 with a single section of boys and girls. The players will play in one section to help girls strengthen their level of play. The tournament has seen some partners, namely ACD Furniture, Maflicg Science Solutions, Laser Sentiments, and Karl Max Foundation, coming on board to support the event.

“We hope that more sponsors will come on board to support chess as their support is making a difference for the sport,” added Jemani.
