THE Midlands/Matabeleland Rugby league has found a sponsor that will be officially unveiled on Monday next week, an official has said. Western Panthers coach, George Mukorera said they were delighted with the sponsorship. “The league will be relaunching in two weeks time since we’ve a new sponsor. We had the Matland Rugby Football Board informing us that they’ve secured a sponsor whom they’ll be unveiling at a meeting on Monday next week. This is obviously good news because getting the league running allows players the opportunity to get selected for the national team,” Mukorera said.

He said the new league will have five teams coming from the Midlands and Matabeleland with the majority of these teams having a large portion of their players being school children.

Mukorera said the sponsorship will cover the trophy, awards and the logistical costs of the league.

“Matabeleland Busters, Old Miltonians, Western Panthers, Gweru and Police Bulldogs will be in the league. School kids dominate these teams and the prospect of being selected for the national team is good for their careers. The new sponsor will cover expenses that we had to incur in the past,” he said.

Mukorera said teams were now preparing for an Independence Tournament that will be held at Hartsfield on Saturday.

He said four teams will take part.

The Panthers coach said schools were using the Independence tournament to prepare for the Dairibord Schools Festival on April 27.
