POLICE in the Midlands province have intensified a crackdown on traffic offences and holiday-related crime to ensure citizens enjoy a smooth Heroes and Defence Forces break.
Over the weekend police and the Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe launched a road safety awareness campaign at the Chiwundura turn-off near Hertfordshire suburb along the Gweru-Harare Highway.
The teams took turns alerting drivers and passengers on the need to adhere to road regulations to avoid unnecessary accidents on the highways.
During the 2025 Heroes and Defence Forces holidays, police recorded 196 road traffic accidents, up from 149 during the corresponding period in 2024. Fatalities also increased to 24 from 16 recorded in 2024.
ZRP Officer Commanding Midlands Province, Commissioner Patson Nyabadza said the campaign combined public awareness with law enforcement measures.
“The campaign aims to reduce road traffic accidents, which typically increase during holiday periods, while also addressing concerns over drug and substance abuse and related criminal activities,” he said.
Comm Nyabadza said they were hopeful that the ongoing awareness campaigns and enforcement operations will help reduce road accidents, crime and other holiday-related incidents during this year’s commemorations.
“We are engaging stakeholders, particularly motorists and the public in general, to take measures to safeguard their property. We are also urging motorists to observe road rules and regulations, avoid reckless driving and other risky behaviour that could potentially result in accidents.
“We subject motorists to the relevant tests, particularly where there is suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol, ” he said.
Comm Nyabadza said they were also conducting roadblocks to ensure that there is no transportation of unapproved alcohol and other illicit beverages.
“Regarding illegal alcoholic beverages, including those not approved by the State, we have deployed teams to conduct operations targeting illegal outlets and illicit brews such as Shebeens. These teams are carrying out operations to identify and eliminate such illegal activities,” he stated.
Mr Ricky Cohen, a motorists from Chiwundura welcomed the initiative and urged road users to exercise caution.
“During these holidays, we’re travelling long distances, so I have leant of the need to be patient on the road, to avoid speeding and make sure that my vehicle is roadworthy to ensure my safety as well as that of fellow motorists and passengers as well,” he said.
A passenger on board Stallion Cruise bus said drivers as well passengers should avoid drinking and driving.
“Drunk passengers can be a problem as well. So, why not wait until you reach your destination and start drinking if you want? Passengers should also speak up when a driver is speeding or driving recklessly,” said Mr Anotida Mwale.
