Midlands Province has been applauded for surpassing its winter wheat target, planting 12 025 hectares with Minister of Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development, Dr Anxious Jongwe Masuka, describing the milestone as both “inspirational and instructive” for the nation.
Speaking during a tour of Mr Clever Matutu’s Hwanu Farm in Gweru District, where 60 hectares of wheat are under crop, Dr Masuka paid glowing tribute to the resilience and determination of the province’s farmers.
“Touring Mr Matutu’s flourishing fields, where 60 hectares of wheat are under crop with an anticipated yield of eight tonnes per hectare, up from last season’s seven, he lauded the progress as a vivid reflection of Midlands’ broader agricultural triumph,” the ministry said in an update.
Dr Masuka disclosed that Midlands planted 12,025 hectares of wheat, exceeding its 12,000-hectare target. He said this achievement was a clear demonstration of the province’s commitment to strengthening national food security.
“This feat is both inspirational and instructive for the nation. Farmers must consolidate these gains through strict adherence to precise agronomic practices and the embrace of modern farming technologies.’
The Minister reaffirmed Government’s unwavering support, assuring farmers of uninterrupted power supply through the Zimbabwe Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company (ZETDC) and reliable irrigation water allocations secured by the Zimbabwe National Water Authority (ZINWA).
He stressed that agriculture should be viewed beyond seasonal harvests, saying it is the bedrock of national transformation.
“Agriculture is the engine that powers job creation, accelerates economic growth, and anchors Zimbabwe’s broader transformation agenda under Vision 2030,” the ministry said.
