Midlands puts 993ha under wheat

Midlands Bureau
Farmers in the Midlands Province have so far put a total of 993 hectares under Command Winter Wheat against a targeted 2 500 hectares, an official has said. Provincial Animal and Livestock Officer Mrs Medline Magwenzi said Kwekwe had the bulk of the land under winter wheat, with a combined 850 hectares so far.

“Of the 993 hectares, that we have put under winter wheat in the Midlands Province, farmers in Kwekwe have a combined 830 hectares which are at various stages.
“We expect them to increase the hectarage to about 1 500 hectares as the season progresses,” she said.

She said the remaining hectarage was spread across Zvishavane, Mvuma, Shurugwi and Gokwe.
Mrs Magwenzi said she was confident the province would reach its 2 500 hectares target.

“We continue with the planting process and we are on course to meet or even surpass the target,” she said.
“The crops are at different stages of maturity. Some are still at the germination stage while some are already at the hoeing stage. As a province we are yet to detect any problems so far,” she said.
