THE Midlands Tennis Board (MTB) has selected a 37 member strong team to take part in the inter-provincial tennis tournament to be held in Mutare from 24 to 26 August. The selection process also saw six players being roped in the Midlands Youth Games tennis team to be held in Bulawayo starting next week.
The selection of the team was done at Kwekwe Sports Club over the weekend where tennis players from across the province converged in the gold mining town to try their luck. Five provinces namely Harare, Bulawayo, Masvingo, Midlands and hosts Manicaland will this year take part in the inter-provincial tournament.
Among top players in the province who would lead Team Midlands are Takunda Zigora, Rudo Chimbetete, Walter Chitopo and Takunda Dube.
After coming last in the last inter-provincial tournament which the province hosted in September last year, MTB chairman Stanley Rudhu said he was hoping that the team will put a much more improved performance this time around.
“It will be a fallacy that we are going to Mutare to challenge for honours because there are provinces like Harare and Manicaland which are way ahead of us in terms of tennis development because they have the resources and have development structures while we only started last year.
“However, be that as it may, we have made tremendous progress in terms of development in the province and therefore we are looking forward to a better showing than we did last year. We are using the inter-provincial tournament as a yardstick to gauge the progress we have made to develop the sport in the past year since we assumed office,’’ he said.
