GWERU -The Midlands province will see polls being held in at least three urban and eight rural wards during the forthcoming
by-elections, following recalls and deaths of former councilors.
With five vacancies, Kwekwe City has the highest number of wards to be contested after former mayor Angeline Kasipo, her former deputy Melody Chingarande and former councilor Washington Moyo were recalled by the MDC-T, while former councilors Shadreck Tobaiwa and Shirley Mutirwara passed away.
Mberengwa Rural District Council has the second highest number of wards to be contested following the deaths of former councilors Torai Matutu and Nephat Shumba.
Elections will be contested in one ward each in Gweru City, Gokwe North, Chirumanzu and Zibagwe Rural District Councils.
Gweru will be seeking to fill the vacancy left by recalled former mayor Josiah Makombe in ward 2, Gokwe North wants to replace the late Stephen Chakabveyo in ward 13 while Chirumanzu and Zibagwe RDCs intend to fill vacancies left by Pedzisai Windizi and Ambrose Ncube in wards 3 and 8 respectively.
According to a notice by the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission, the Nomination Court for the elections will sit on 26 January, while
elections will be held on 26 March this year. – New Ziana
