A MIDWIFE at Sally Mugabe Central Hospital appeared at the Harare Magistrates Court yesterday, facing allegations of human trafficking involving an infant.
Betty Sena is accused of unlawfully faking the death of a newborn and handing the infant over to another woman.
She has been remanded in custody to December 3 for a bail ruling.
The State claims that between February and March 2024, Sena conspired with Evelyn Zisengwe, Dion Tore and Ayanda Zisengwe to traffic a female infant, now nine months old, for unlawful adoption.
Sena allegedly induced Zisengwe to deliver her child prematurely.
Zisengwe gave birth on February 25 at 28 weeks.
On March 5, Sena reportedly transferred the new-born to Tore at the hospital, falsifying documents to make it seem as if she was the biological mother. Sena misused her position to discharge the premature infant before it was safe.
Sena is alleged to have received $20 for her services and created a fake death record indicating that Zisengwe’s child had died shortly after birth.
Detectives from the CID Counter Terrorism Unit arrested Sena after being implicated by Tore and Zisengwe.
Ms Mercy Masamvi represented the State during the proceedings.
