Midwives play crucial role in saving lives, says Minister Ncube

THE role of midwives in maternal healthcare has been described as remarkable owing to the delicate nature of their work and the critical role they play in bringing new life into the world.

This was highlighted by the Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution for Bulawayo Metropolitan Province, Judith Ncube, during commemorations of the International Day of Midwives held at United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH) on Friday morning.

She was represented by Mrs Boestoarelo Noko, a director in the Minister of State’s Office.

“Your presence here today demonstrates our collective commitment to improving maternal and newborn health services in our country. Today we gather to honor the remarkable contribution of midwives dedication, compassion and professionalism, continue to save lives and strengthen families and communities. Meanwhile, remain at the heart of maternal health, providing essential services before during and after child’s path,” said Minister Ncube.

This year’s commemorations are being held under the theme: “1 Million More Midwives: A Call for All of Us to Act.”

“This theme highlights the global need to invest in services and to strengthen the health workforce. As a Government, we acknowledge the critical role the midwives play in achieving health coverage and improving health outcomes for citizens. Midwives are more than healthcare providers. They are caregivers, educators, counselors and advocates for women and families. I therefore commend all midwives across Zimbabwe for their unwavering commitment and sacrifice often rendered under challenging circumstances,” she said.

Minister Ncube said the dedication of midwives continues to make a meaningful difference in the lives of mothers, babies and communities.

“Today’s commemorations come at a time when the nation through the leadership of his Excellency, the President of the Republic of Zimbabwe Dr Emmerson Mnangagwa is moving with the Mantra, leaving no one in no place behind. As we commemorate this important day, let us in your commitment to supporting training and empowering more midwives, so that every woman and every child can access quality healthcare services,” she added.

She encouraged all stakeholders to continue working together in support of maternal and child healthcare services.
