Mighty Warriors seek to overturn deficit

The Mighty Warriors have often found themselves in a tight spot, whether on or off the field, in a number of assignments they have had to undertake.

Tomorrow, the first Zimbabwean team to qualify for a major global outfit will be in a spot of bother as they host Angola at Pretoria’s Lucas Moripe stadium in South Africa, seeking to overturn a 2-1 deficit they incurred last Thursday in Luanda.

The Mighty Warriors have been in such situations, and Zimbabweans will be hoping that new girl Ruvimbo Mucherera and veteran Rutendo Makore will find their range and help their team post the victory they so need in their quest for a place at the 2026 CAF Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

Zimbabwe captain Emmaculate Msipa remains confident her team can turn the tide against the Angolans and book a date in their final qualification round against Malawi. Msipa has also been around long enough to know that with better precision and the right mentality, the Mighty Warriors can be unbeatable on their day.

She expressed satisfaction with the manner in which the Mighty Warriors have gone about their preparations since shifting their base to South Africa soon after the first leg had been done and dusted.

“We have travelled back from Angola to South Africa, and we are settling very well.

“The girls are happy, the weather is great, and we are having positive conversations about the game on Wednesday,” she said. The Mighty Warriors have been training rigorously in Pretoria, focusing on addressing weaknesses exposed during the first leg.

Msipa stressed the importance of team cohesion and determination.

“The team bonding is super, and our preparations are going well. We are working on the areas where we lacked in the previous match,” Msipa said.

Despite the deficit, Msipa believes the tie is far from over.

“My message to the girls is that the marathon continues; the race is not yet over. We still have 90 minutes plus to win, and that means we have a chance.

“I know we are going to do well.”

Msipa also urged the nation to rally her troops to glory, highlighting the significance of their support in the crucial game.

Given the huge Zimbabwean presence in South Africa, the Mighty Warriors are looking to maximise on home support in tomorrow’s game.

“My message to the fans is we need you. Come and support the girl child in numbers. The Mighty Warriors need you”.
