Zimbabwe…………1THE Mighty Warriors got their campaign in the African Women’s Championship off to a good start when they beat Botswana at Sir Seretse Khama Barracks in Gaborone yesterday.
Now Rosemary Mugadza’s side will fancy their chances of progressing when they play in the reverse fixture at Rufaro on the weekend of February 28-March 2.
Striker Violet Bepete scored the priceless goal as Zimbabwe continued with their dominance over Botswana who played without their star player Thuto Ramafifi because of injury.
But she could be available for the return leg. Botswana coach Mmoloki Masole knows it will be tall order for his side when they travel to Harare at the end of this month although he remains upbeat on their chances of overturning the deficit. If they beat Botswana, Zimbabwe they will then meet the winner between Zambia and Tanzania in the last qualifying round.
The winners of that contest will progress to the main event scheduled for October in Namibia. The Mighty Warriors know that they have a very good chance of progressing given that they have a good record against Botswana and either of the two teams they will face in the next round.
The top three teams at the African Women’s’ Championships will qualify for the Fifa Women’s World Cup in Canada next year.
