Milk production to go up

Dairy producers in Manicaland province are optimistic of improved milk production in 2018 on the back of an increase in the dairy herd and good rainfall forecast this season. The province has been producing approximately 800 000 litres of milk per month owing to decreased capacity in most dairy farms, as well as high production costs.

In an interview, Tsonzo dairy farmers association chairman, Mr Washington Sagonda said the 2017-2018 season was looking good for most farmers in the province.

“In the last two years, our farmers have been working towards increasing the number of heifers they have and we have noted the increase in output since then. The good rains we had last year also contributed to production. We hope to continue registering growth this year because the rainfall patterns are expected to remain favourable. Our cows will have good feed,” he said.

Manicaland currently contributes only 17 percent of the total national milk output of about five million litres monthly. Zimbabwe Association of Dairy
