Milling industry workers and their employers are haggling over pay rise negotiations for the first quarter of 2021, and the employees are threatening to boycott work if their demands are not met.
The workers, under the United Federation Food Allied Workers’ Union of Zimbabwe, said the negotiations had reached a stalemate due to the “conduct and arrogance” of the employers’ agents.
They called on the employers to reconsider their stance to the negotiations, failure of which picketing will take place in Bulawayo and Harare.
However, the Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe (GMAZ) national chairperson Mr Tafadzwa Musarara responded to in a letter dated April 6, 2021, saying it was unfair for them to threaten a demonstration before providing a 14-day written notice as required by the Labour Act.
Further, the notice should be coupled with sufficient cause for the need to boycott work.
“We trust and believe that we will reach an amicable decision on the subject with your cooperation,” said Mr Musarara.
