THE Milton High School 2022 rugby season got off to a perfect start after they received a kit donation through the Shingirai Nyabunze Trust which is overseen by businessman Shasha Gomez.
Gomez made the donation through his company Consha Enterprises.
The late Nyabunze, who died in 2012 at the age of 22, was a close friend to Gomez.
The two played rugby together for Christian Brothers College (CBC) first team.
Guest of honour at the kit presentation Martin Shone, who is the Zimbabwe Rugby Union (ZRU) vice president thanked the sponsor for supporting the development of the game at grassroots level.
“It’s a good thing that Milton High School is catching them young which is something that we as ZRU have made our mandate. Sponsorships such as this help us tap into the young talent that is in abundance in the country.
“This school has produced players who are playing rugby from professional level all the way to social which is proof of the talent here. To the players, I would like to assure you that you have chosen well in taking up rugby as your preferred sport,” said Shone.
Gomez said: “Unfortunately we been out owing to Covid-19 but that is over and we are back to normalcy. We support as much as we can. We also have more guys joining us to sponsor the game.
“When we started this sponsorship we wanted to get rid of drug use and gang wars and I’m pleased that we have made strides in that regard. We want people to understand that rugby is a sport played by gentlemen.”
The Elephants coach Aubrey Dube said: “I would like to thank the sponsor. We need to wear the jersey with pride and produce the results.”
Headmaster Similo Ncube emphasised the issue of discipline and assured the team that they have all the support from the school.
The team, also known as the Young Elephants will play against Allan Wilson at Milton this morning in their first game of the season.
