MINDA High School has been crowned this year’s Matabeleland South Provincial winners of the National Aids Council (NAC) High School Quiz Competitions.
The Minda girls walked away with $400 for their efforts. Mzingwane took second position while Usher High School came third and received $300 and $200 respectively. On fourth position was Filabusi High while Plumtree High landed the fifth position.
Minda High School will now represent Matabeleland South Province at the NAC National High School Quiz Competitions to be held in Harare later this year.
The quiz, a brainchild of NAC and the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education aims to raise awareness on HIV/Aids.
NAC provincial co-ordinator Isaiah Abureni said the prevalence of HIV was low among the school going age group compared to those above that age group.
“Primary and secondary school going age group is our window of hope as far as preventing HIV transmission is concerned.
“NAC in collaboration with the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education is engaging in a variety of ways to enhance learners’ knowledge on HIV/Aids.
“We hope that the acquired knowledge will translate to appropriate health behaviours in preventing the spread of HIV,” said Abureni.
Acting provincial education director Reuben Mabhena encouraged the quiz participants to share the acquired information with their colleagues as well as their communities to promote a better understanding of HIV/Aids.
Guest of honour at the event, Johnson Mazombe, said:
“In this age where many bright minds with great potential are being ravaged and destroyed in the prime of their youth by HIV/Aids, I challenge you, the connoisseurs of knowledge within the province of Matabeleland South to look beyond the momentary thrills of premarital sex, the fleeting excitement of drug use and deceptive folly of mob psychology and choose to be different.”
