Mine worker dies in shaft accident

A Mimosa Mine employee died in one of the mine shafts on Monday after being hit by a barricade.

Charles Teketai, 41, who was an operator of a Load Haul Dump (LHD) died while working in North Shaft 6 at around 12 PM.

Mimosa head of corporate affairs Elizabeth Nerwande- Chibanda confirmed the accident.

“Mimosa Mining Company announces with deep regret an underground fatality involving one of its Load, Haul and Dump machine (LHD) Operator, Charles Teketai, on the 4th of January 2016,” she said.

“Teketai was tramming ore when his LHD machine encroached into a drill steel barricade, resulting in one of the drill steels striking his head. He died from the subsequent injuries.”

In line with the company’s safety policies in attaining zero harm in all operations, Chibanda said the company was conducting a full investigation to determine the cause of the accident.

Last year another employee at the mine, Eric Mukazi, a face preparation supervisor at the platinum was crushed to death by a rock boulder at one of the mine shafts while barring bad hangings in August.

Mimosa Mine executive chairman, Winston Chitando, speaking during the handover of mining equipment to small scale miners last year pledged to ensure the safety of employees and cited attained 5 million fatality free shifts which the company had achieved before the death of Mukazi.
