Mine workers’ wives demonstrate over salaries

ANTI-RIOT police were on Friday called to restore order at Old Nic Mine in Bulawayo after about 50 women protested against non-payment of salaries to their husbands. When The Chronicle news crew arrived at the mine at around 2PM, the women were being addressed by a police officer while others stood guard at the mine gate.

Security guards denied the news crew entry into the mine and blocked the journalists from interviewing management over the issue.

A source at the mine, who preferred anonymity, said there was a solidarity march by the women who were not happy about the non-payment of salaries to their husbands.

“The women said the way the mine management was treating workers was unfair and inhuman. We’ve gone for so many months without receiving our salaries.

“They’re saying they want to know what the management has to say over the issue because their husbands leave home for work on a daily basis but are not bringing anything to the table,” said the worker.

Sanele Moyo, who witnessed the demonstration said:

“They were shouting that their husbands were being abused, working for nothing when they made some individuals in the management team very rich.

“The situation was very tense and I’m sure a solution will definitely be found. If these women are to come back empty-handed, I foresee disaster.”
