The rainy season is a blessing, bringing much-needed water for agriculture and daily life. However, it often wreaks havoc on infrastructure, particularly roads. For motorists who use the Bubi-Inyathi Road in Matabeleland North Province, navigating the treacherous paths during the rainy season used to be an unbearable challenge. Thanks to the intervention of Mingchang Sino-Africa Mining Investment, a Chinese-owned company, the road is now passable, much to the delight of local communities.
“I used to dread the rainy season because this road would be nearly impossible to use,” said Busani Dube, a frequent traveler along the route. “But now, driving here is so much better. We truly appreciate what Mingchang has done for us.”
Thabani Maseko and Mathew Makonese, both local motorists, echoed similar sentiments. They expressed gratitude to Mingchang for stepping in when the community needed it most, praising the company’s commitment to making a tangible difference.
Mingchang Sino-Africa has been operating in Zimbabwe for 15 years, and its impact goes beyond mining. The company has embraced corporate social responsibility (CSR) as a cornerstone of its operations, contributing significantly to infrastructure development, education, and employment creation in Matabeleland North.
In collaboration with the Bubi Rural District Council (RDC), Mingchang rehabilitated and constructed critical roads that serve as lifelines for the community. Among the key projects completed are:
Peter Pan Mine to Bubi Mine Road (30 km): A vital gravel road for transporting goods and people.
Tiberious Road (5 km): Improved for smoother transport.
Mbembezi River to Turk Mine Detour (4 km): Ensuring access along the Bulawayo-Nkayi Road.
Bulawayo-Nkayi Road Upgrades (16 km): Enhanced road infrastructure connecting ARDA Balu Turnoff, Umfazi Umithi, and Sunace Mine.
These projects have significantly improved access to essential services, boosted local businesses, and strengthened the region’s economic prospects.
Matabeleland North Minister of State for Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Hon. Richard Moyo, commended Mingchang for its efforts during a recent visit to the construction sites.
“We are proud of the work being done by Mingchang Sino-Africa. They are setting an example of responsible investment by not only focusing on mining but also giving back to the community,” said Minister Moyo. “Such projects improve livelihoods, foster economic opportunities, and enhance investor confidence in Zimbabwe.”
Mingchang’s Regional Manager, Mr. Liang Guo Du, emphasized the company’s long-term commitment to Zimbabwe.
“Our philosophy is simple: while we extract value from the land, we also invest in the communities we operate in. This year, we’ve not only worked on roads but also donated 26,000 bricks to Mbembeswane Primary School. It’s about leaving a lasting legacy,” said Mr. Du.
Bubi RDC CEO, Dr. Patson Mlilo, applauded Mingchang for answering the community’s call for support.
“Partnerships like these are critical for sustainable development. Mingchang’s contributions are transforming lives in Bubi, and we urge other investors to follow their example,” said Dr. Mlilo.
Mingchang’s investments align with Zimbabwe’s Vision 2030 goal of achieving upper-middle-income status. By addressing infrastructure challenges and supporting local communities, the company is laying a foundation for inclusive growth and sustainable development.
With projects like these, Mingchang Sino-Africa is proving that mining companies can do more than extract minerals—they can also build bridges, roads, and brighter futures for communities across Zimbabwe.
