Mining sector drives broader economic resurgence across secondary industries

THE rapid expansion of Zimbabwe’s mining sector is triggering a positive domino effect across supporting industries, reinforcing the country’s historic economic framework.

Mr Tafadzwa Chinamo, chief executive officer of the Zimbabwe Investment and Development Agency, speaking on the New Corporate Landscape in Zimbabwe, observed that heavy capital inflow into mineral exploration and extraction is creating massive downstream demand for secondary services.

He was delivering a presentation at the Confederation of Zimbabwe Industries (CZI) Strategic Intelligence Forum organised in partnership with Zimpapers.

The three-day forum started this morning and runs until 9 October 2026 at the Hyatt Regency, The Meikles in Harare.

It brings together chief executives, board members, entrepreneurs, regulators, development partners and sustainability practitioners.

“We are essentially reclaiming the economic playbook that once made this country thrive,” Chinamo stated.

“Extraction is leading the charge, but miners cannot operate in isolation. They require safety wear manufacturing, electrical engineering services, machinery repairs, financial services, and localised supply chains.”

This surge in mining activity is also boosting consumer spending power, particularly in regions with heavy gold mining such as the Midlands Province.

According to Mr Chinamo, the increased employment and localised cash flow in mining communities are outstripping spending trends seen in major urban centres like Harare, signaling a decentralised economic revival driven by primary resource extraction.
