Minister in full support of police blitz

TRANSPORT and Infrastructural Development Minister Felix Mhona says he is in full support of the vehicle number plate blitz currently being enforced by the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP).

Minister Mhona noted that the government had adequate number plates in stock and did not condone acts of corruption in the issuance of the motor vehicle registration plates.

According to ZRP, the operation is being conducted to account for criminals who are committing crimes using plate-less, unregistered, and unlicensed motor vehicles.

The operation started off with a total of 967 arrests being made countrywide on the first day.

Writing on his Twitter handle Minister Mhona said he was going to visit the Central Vehicle Registry (CVR) to comprehend some of the challenges being faced by that arm of his ministry.

“The issue of vehicle number plates has become topical and I want to take this opportunity to inform the nation that we have adequate number plates in stock.

“Issues of order are important in every jurisdiction and as a Ministry, we fully support the blitz by law enforcement agencies on unregistered cars which are largely contributing to the high crime rate in the country.

“We do not tolerate corruption in the issuance of number plates and tomorrow I will visit CVR to understand challenges they are facing in issuing numbers plates. There is no need for the public to pay extra money to get the plates,” said Minister Mhona.

The government says it has enough number plates in stock but there has been a growing backlog of number plates lately.
