ENERGY and Power Development Minister, Honourable July Moyo this afternoon toured the 153kW Nzvimbe Solar Power Plant in Makoni South, a major step in the push for renewable energy.
The plant, now 94 percent complete, will supply power to rural communities over 15km from the nearest ZETDC lines, boosting rural electrification in line with Vision 2030.
The project is being implemented by the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), with funding from the Rural Electrification Fund (REF).
In an interview, Minister Moyo underscored the importance of rural-based energy solutions.
“The Nzvimbe Solar Project is part of a broader national strategy to harness Zimbabwe’s abundant sunlight for power generation, especially in under-served rural areas,” he said, also urging REA to ensure that there is full use of the power by the locals.
“Extend usage by creating opportunities in the rural areas. We need rural transformation. Sustainability must come from usage, let us ensure there is base usage,” he said.
Minister Moyo was accompanied by the Minister of State for Manicaland Provincial Affairs and Devolution, Advocate Misheck Mugadza, REA acting chief executive officer, Mrs Felister Makumbinde, and other officials.
