EGYPT has joined a growing list of countries expressing sympathy and solidarity with Zimbabwe following the Lake Kariba ferry disaster that claimed 46 lives, as rescue teams continue searching for missing passengers.
In a statement yesterday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Egyptian Expatriates of the Arab Republic of Egypt said it stood in solidarity with Zimbabwe during the difficult period.
“The Government of the Arab Republic of Egypt extended its heartfelt sympathies to the Republic of Zimbabwe, its Government and people, over the victims of the Lake Kariba accident, which claimed the lives of dozens and left several others injured.
“It also conveyed its deepest condolences to the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to all those injured.
“The statement further reaffirmed Egypt’s full solidarity with the sisterly Republic of Zimbabwe in the wake of this painful tragedy,” reads the statement.
Egyptian Ambassador to Zimbabwe Dr Maha Serag Eldin also conveyed her condolences to Zimbabwe.
“On behalf of the Government and people of the Arab Republic of Egypt, the Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt in Harare extends its most sincere and heartfelt condolences to His Excellency President Emmerson Mnangagwa, the Government, and the resilient people of the Republic of Zimbabwe, and especially to the bereaved families who have lost their loved ones in the tragic accident on Lake Kariba.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families during this difficult time of national mourning.
“These expressions of sympathy and support reflect the distinguished historical relations and longstanding bonds of friendship between Egypt and Zimbabwe,” said the Ambassador.
The messages add to the growing number of condolences Zimbabwe has received from countries and international partners following the tragedy, which has been declared a State of Disaster by President Mnangagwa.
Palestine, China and South Africa are some of the countries that have condoled with Zimbabwe.
Rescue and recovery efforts are continuing as authorities work to account for all passengers who were aboard the vessel when it capsized on Lake Kariba.
