Information, Publicity and Broadcasting Services Minister Dr Zhemu Soda has toured the Great Zimbabwe Hydro Power project at Lake Mutirikwi, as he continues to tour Second Republic signature projects in Masvingo province.
The hydropower project started feeding 5MW of power into the national grid over a year ago. The project, a public-private partnership, cost US$14,6 million.
It is one of the signature projects completed under the Second Republic and signals the country’s pivot to renewable sources of energy in line with Vision 2030.
Minister Soda, who is being accompanied by his ministry’s Permanent Secretary, Mr Nick Mangwana and other officials, was taken through the hydro power production process by Great Zim hydro power company coordinator Mr Hebert Chipfumbu.
The Permanent Secretary for Masvingo Provincial Affairs and Devolution Dr Addmore Pazvakavambwa, told Dr Soda that the province wants to be a net clean energy exporter by the year 2030.
Dr Pazvakavambwa said Masvingo wants to leverage its high dam density to build many hydro power plants.
Three more 5W power plants were feasible downstream of Lake Mutirikwi to take the dam’s clean energy potential to 20MW.
Minister Soda is on a tour of signature projects implemented by the Second Republic across Masvingo province.
