THE Minister of Primary and Secondary Education, Cde Lazarus Dokora, yesterday warned school pupils against crossing flooded rivers or seeking shelter in unsafe classrooms amid revelations that 11 people have been confirmed dead this season from flood-related incidents.
Cde Dokora urged provincial education directors to work in liaison with the Civil Protection Unit to protect pupils from the effects of flooded rivers, lightning and waterborne diseases.
The minister said school authorities should come up with a programme to compensate learners who miss lessons due to flood-related incidents.
“Provincial education directors must come up with measures to compensate learners for any loss of learning time that might occur due to these disasters.
“Weekly updates to Ministry Head Office should be made highlighting challenges and progress in this regard. These weekly briefs will assist the ministry on policy interventions,” he said.
Minister Dokora’s call comes after police recently launched a massive public awareness campaign countrywide urging people to desist from crossing flooded rivers.
