Work on the installation of a productivity booster kit at Yomba Lot Irrigation Scheme, anchored on a sprinkler network for irrigation, is taking shape as the Government implements rural development 8.0.
A pumpset, powered by a 200-horsepower electric motor, has already been installed, with trenching, laying of pipes and sprinklers currently underway.
Lands, Agriculture, Fisheries, Water and Rural Development Minister Dr Anxious Masuka and Mashonaland West Provincial Affairs and Devolution Minister Marian Chombo, toured the project to assess progress.
Yomba Irrigation Scheme in Mashonaland West province becomes the second scheme to have the system after President Mnangagwa launched the productivity booster kit for A1 farmers in Mazowe last year.
Dr Masuku said the successful implementation of the project will enable roll-out to other provinces.
He said farmers should move to have title deeds for security and access to financing as collateral.
Minister Masuku said expansion of the country’s irrigation capacity was key in increasing production and productivity of farms while promoting the establishment of viable businesses on farms.
The scheme is expected to boost production in Mashonaland West province and promote improved livelihoods.
Minister Chombo urged the farmers to fully utilise the resources the Government was providing.
“As Mashonaland West province, we see this as an opportunity for growth and consolidation of our position as the breadbasket of the country,” she said.
