Permanent secretary in the Ministry of Primary and Secondary Education, Tumisang Thabela, said they are committed to promoting quality education regardless of gender, ethnicity or economic status.
Presenting the belated 2019 Secretary’s Merit Award to Murewa Central Primary School, she said the school was awarded the gong for making tangible efforts in improving learning outcomes.
“Our education system is set to provide today ‘s generation with knowledge, skills, and a hybrid of attitudes that are intended to advance the economic and social objectives of the Government. The Ministry has an initiative of mobile science laboratories for primary schools. This is an endeavour to introduce STEM teaching in the learning pathway before transcending to high school.
“To date 700 primary schools have benefited from donations of mobile science laboratories and this will resultantly upscale the uptake of STEM learning areas equitably across the country.” Thanela also presided over the same event at Jameson High School in Kadoma on Saturday where she hinted that the Ministry would introduce the concept of technical secondary schools in all provinces.
“The technical high schools will help pupils to acquire innovative industrial skills that will either fit them well in industry or enable them to be creators of their own employment as opposed to job seekers. Mashonaland West has selected Chinhoyi High School as its pilot school to specialise in technical graphics.
“Pupils from these schools will be trade tested, starting with three in Form 2, two in Form 4 and one in Form 6,” said Thabela.
She urged Jameson High to guard jealously the award. “The Secretary’s Merit Award you are receiving today should be jealously guarded as it is a symbol of outstanding achievement by the school. I observed a state-of-the-art cultural village. The place that invokes a feeling of nostalgia and home sickness due to a typical rural setting.
“It is important for schools to make sure they continue to enrich learning experiences for learners in order to improve learning outcomes. This village will go a long way in preserving our culture as citizens of the beautiful land of Zimbabwe.”
